Vaccines are known to be a cheap, safe and effective method of saving lives. Yet collectively, meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis continue to cause over three quarters of a million childhood deaths every year in Sub-Saharan Africa.&nbsp;

The Gambia: Leading the Fight against Pneumonia

Every 15 seconds, a child somewhere in the world dies of pneumonia. That&rsquo;s 5,500 child deaths every day, and 2 million child deaths every year.* Thus, pneumonia is the biggest killer of children in the world. Despite this overwhelming statistic, pneumonia prevention and treatment strategies remain severely underfunded and are rarely mentioned in the news media.

Mosquito screens found to be cheap and effective in malaria prevention

Trials of a screen-based malaria prevention programme in 500 homes in The Gambia have led to a 50 per cent reduction in malaria transmission and anaemia in children. A child dies from malaria in Africa every 30 seconds and infection can lead to an increased risk of anaemia, which can also prove fatal. Yet screening has, to date, often been ignored in favour of using drugs and insecticides.<br />
