Job Information

We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified IT professional for the post of IT Client Support Specialist. The post-holder will be based at one of our field stations in Basse or Keneba with frequent travels to other sites across the country and will be responsible for the configuration and maintenance of all MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM computing equipment including encryption of all mobile computer devices (laptops, tablets etc.). S/he will maintain security (Antivirus and Windows update) of servers and computer systems at field stations and sites not currently connected to Fajara network. The post holder will be responsible for all Server and Network systems.

Essential requirements 

  • A degree in computing or a scientific/mathematical subject (with a substantial computing component) plus CompTIA A+ Certification or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience of Computer hardware maintenance.
  • Good all-round knowledge of PC computer equipment (PCs, printers, scanners, etc) of the latest desktop Operating Systems and desktop software, including MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM standard Microsoft Office products.
  • Customer focus and dedication to customer satisfaction.
  • Experience of SQL server software.
  • Experience, training and/or certification in VMware vSphere and vCenter.
  • Certification or previous experience of Microsoft Exchange Email system.
  • Experience of Veeam Backup Software and Server Disaster recovery.
  • Management experience.
  • Excellent communicator in English – Written & Verbal.
  • Willingness to work upcountry.
  • Willingness to be on-call out of office hours.
  • High level of technical skills in support of Windows 7/10 operating systems.
  • Ability to manage Active Directory Objects, Domain Joins and Password resets/unlocks.
  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • Able to remain calm and handle stressful situations and communicate technical information to non-technical users & vice versa.
  • Previous experience working in the field of medical research.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, playing an active role in a small team of computing professionals.
  • Experience in Desktop Support with some network infrastructure support.                                 

The salary will be paid in Grade 3, 25 Points of MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM payscale.
