We are looking for a highly organised and proactive individual to join AREF’s small team in The Gambia. You will be responsible for developing and delivering AREF Academy programmes and workshops. You will be employed by MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM.

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is linked to the UK Medical Research Foundation and is a new registered charity that enables early-career researcher scientists in Africa to develop and lead research to improve health and save lives.

We want to hear from you if you possess a Masters level qualification in a relevant discipline and  experience of events planning, organising and management (preferably educational or training events), project management, budget management, managing staff, managing suppliers and contractors and a good understanding of health research in Africa.

You will be able amongst other things to:

  • demonstrate a strong customer service orientation
  • lead by example, setting standards and monitoring delivery, committing to high standards and to organisational improvement
  • work dynamically and flexibly within a small team, achieving influence at all levels
  • plan, seize opportunity, manage problems and manage risk
  • demonstrate strong organisational and project management skills including the management of multiple activities.
  • write to a high standard.
  • influence and negotiate.
  • use survey and other evaluative methods to produce high quality reliable management information.

You must be ambitious, approachable, dedicated and be willing to be involved in looking at ways to engage and improve.  It will be an added advantage if you have an academic qualification in event or hospitality management and/or project management or a postgraduate qualification relevant to science, research or health-improvement in low-income settings.

The salary for this role is based on Grade 3 – 27 points of MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM’s pay scale. Also, on offer is a market force allowance based on a percentage of the gross salary for the role.

The appointment is until 31 March 2021 initially and will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
